A brief history of StarQuest
Spring 2012, 9th Grade: Completed my first formal programming course, in Adobe Flash
Spring 2013, 10th Grade: Negotiated my first job as a freelance software developer, writing customized Bukkit plugins for public Minecraft servers. I took several small contract-like jobs through 2013 and early 2014.
Fall 2014, 11th Grade: Founded StarQuest, my own independent company, registered in the state of South Carolina. The goal of the company was to create a new distinct space game by modifying only the minecraft server software. StarQuest’s innovative design pushes the boundaries of what was possible with server-only modification, bringing a modded experience to a much wider and less technological audience.
Spring 2014, 11th Grade: StarQuest is featured on the front page of the official Minecraft forums, and on the Yogscast. Being widely featured brings a huge influx in traffic that completely overwhelms our infrastructure, so SQ hires several “paid” “employees”; mostly other high school students, plus a couple of bored adults.
Summer 2014, 12th Grade: Minecraft amends its End User Licensce Agreement to limit the ways in which other groups can profit off of its game. This sweepingly regulatory change vastly reduces the earning potential of companies like StarQuest.
Fall 2014, 12th Grade: End of involvement with StarQuest; ownership is transferred to the next in line. It continues to exist as a hobby project, but is no longer a profitable company.
